Training is a huge part of pitching and developing a strong work ethic will only further accelerate success and improvement. This is not a general training program. This is baseball specific, complimenting the root of the sporting action, working throughout all the planes in a full range of motion. We target the actions that will increase This is a large focus for the majority of our athletes in our programs.
We target postural stability and integrated flexibility in all of our athletes along with function strength exercises. Without a sound core and posture, mechanics are compromised along with the greater risk for injury. We start with strength before we move on to advanced mechanical work because without the ability to perform and repeat mechanics will not lead to improvement and success.
We can’t stress the importance of maintaining your posture and balance throughout your delivery. Everything is based around that strength/ability. Without that, there is no way to improve. If your pitching coach doesn’t include any type of postural stability or integrated flexibility, ask him why? Especially with the younger athletes, this is so important, basically as important as the actual throwing part. Most lack the basic ability to maintain their posture throughout the pitching motion. Prior to puberty, it is not so much muscle hypertophy, but it is the neurological adaptations that leads to strength/coordination gains. Young athletes are very receptive to this type of training even before puberty kicks in.
We start each session with 15-30 minutes of pitching specific strength & conditioning that includes a full body dynamic warmup, integrated flexibility, postural stability/balance, followed with joint stability/injury prevention, and core/ab work. These are all baseball/pitching/sport specific, meaning, you probably haven’t seen most of it before. These aren’t your ordinary exercises. As we progress closer to the season, the amount of throwing picks up, and the amount of strength/conditioning decreases while the athletes are encouraged to more strength/conditioning at home.
Along with training at each sessions, we will prepare and set up a customized strength & conditioning program for each athlete that can be done on his own during the week. We advise athletes on off-season and in-season workouts, and any other types of training or nutrition questions that may come up during each lesson. We will provide an individualized training program for each athlete to do at home, which should be incorporated at least 3x a week during the offseason and 1-2x a week during the season. Each workout is developed specifically around pitching specific exercises. Keaton has a great knowledge in program development and sport specific training for athletes.
